La plateforme Cairn.info annonce aujourd’hui la mise en place d’un dispositif de soutien aux revues de sciences humaines et sociales qui souhaitent s’orienter vers une diffusion numérique gratuite en conformité avec les principes de la Science ouverte.
Ce nouveau dispositif repose sur un partenariat entre Cairn.info, les bibliothèques universitaires françaises rassemblées dans le consortium COUPERIN, l’Agence bibliographique de l’enseignement supérieur (ABES) et le ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche (MESRI).
Ouvert à toutes les revues partenaires de Cairn.info et s’inspirant du modèle Subscribe to open (S2O), ce mécanisme de soutien permet aux bibliothèques membres de Couperin de remplacer leurs dépenses d’abonnements par un soutien financier annuel et récurrent aux revues participantes.
Ce dispositif s’appuie sur trois principales idées :
- Le principe de volontariat, il n’y a aucun caractère obligatoire pour les revues et éditeurs partenaires de Cairn.info.
- Une contrepartie financière récurrente pour les revues participantes, de façon à leur permettre de compenser partiellement la perte des revenus provenant de la diffusion numérique sur Cairn.info.
- Une participation des revues réversible, avec la possibilité chaque année d’y mettre un terme.
Pendant toute la durée de ce nouveau dispositif, un comité réunissant le consortium COUPERIN, l’ABES, le MESR et Cairn.info se chargera d’évaluer, à l’automne de chaque année, les candidatures des revues pour une prise d’effet en janvier de l’année suivante.
En 2022, le dispositif intègre déjà trois revues pilotes (Population, Flux et Travail, genre et sociétés). Il sera étendu dès 2023 à l’ensemble des revues dont la candidature aura été retenue par le comité d’évaluation.

Cairn.info announces its Open Science support mechanism for 2022-2027
Cairn.info announced today the implementation of a support mechanism for humanities and social sciences journals that wish to move towards Open Access digital distribution in accordance with the principles of Open Science.
This new mechanism was made possible by a partnership between Cairn.info, the French university libraries consortium COUPERIN, the Agence Bibliographique de l’Enseignement Supérieur (ABES) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESRI).
Open to all partner journals of Cairn.info and inspired by the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, this support mechanism allows Couperin member libraries to replace their subscription spend with an annual and recurring financial support for participating journals.
This mechanism is based on three key ideas:
- It is voluntary: the journals and publishers on Cairn.info are under no obligation to participate.
- It is perennial: participating journals are guaranteed a recurring financial contribution, to allow them to partially compensate for the loss of income from digital subscriptions on Cairn.info.
- It is reversible: journals are free to put an end to their participation in the project at the end of every year.
For the duration of this new mechanism, a committee made up of the COUPERIN consortium, ABES, MESRI and Cairn.info will be responsible for evaluating the applications of journals in the fall of each year, so that they can be included in the project in January of the following year.
In 2022, the system will already include three pilot journals (Population, Flux and Travail, genre et sociétés). It will be extended in 2023 to all journals whose applications have been accepted by the evaluation committee.
